full expression

this is the summer 2010 issue of New York Runner magazine and if you squint, you can read my interview.  i am commenting on how yoga -style stretching can benefit runners.  balance can stave off burnout/ injury.  i am a advocate and example of the importance of balance in one's expression of self.  in this article i cheer the advantages of moving-meditation, conscious breathing during total-body multi-directional movement, and how it enhances the body/breath awareness lending to the prevention of running injuries.                                                                                       though i wasn't able to elaborate in this brief article, i suggest that yin and yang activities be incorporated in one's physical and daily-life expression.  for example :: i practice and teach an extremely slow-moving, intensely meditative, long-held-posture yoga style [that inspires sighs and sweet moans] i call moving-meditation.  i fall into trance and guide students into the deep mystery of body and Self.  i breathe aloud.  my voice is soft and nurturing.
but baby in contrast, i also lift weights like a meat-head. i appreciate a slamming soundtrack with booming bass when i pump iron.  i dig a dimly-lit boxing class with the instructor screaming "4-more, GiRL!  NOW!", and that's the way i teach my group fitness classes.                                                         this physical yin/yang expression helps me find my center, live in the middle, express my fire and my cool mOOn so i can flow evenly without experiencing burnout or becoming frozen by retreating too deeply into the cool bleu.
how do you find balance?  where is your fire?  what keeps you cool and calm?

this post ::  to movers everywhere and the runners of the new york city marathon november 7, 2010 ::  sweet success

I am not so sure that I find balance as much as I seek it. Perhaps that really is our great quest in life. Life’s challenges approaching on all sides and at all times would seem to disrupt our organic equilibrium of peace and harmony. Consequently, we seek correction. I suppose that I find that balance in different ways and places contingent upon the source of inharmony. More often than not though, I find that harmony in the only place it truly exists, from within.

anonymous, it surely is inharmony {exhaustion, apathy, agitation} that alerts me that i'm out of balance. i can get back to my center with exercise, deep breathing, meditation+loving activities: teaching kids to shine, petting my dog, sitting in a tub of water, opening up to cry with a friend, and being available to listen and chat to re-balance a friend.
